During this scary and stressful time we ask that you be very careful opening any emails and attachments you receive.

Recently there has been a large increase in COVID-19 ‘phishing’ emails.

Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by disguising oneself as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

Among some of the latest scams is an email detailing COVID-19 relief payment offering $2,500 in assistance. Recipients are required to download and fill in an application form, which contains an embedded macro that downloads malicious software.

Another, is an email that appears to have been sent from the World Health Organisation (WHO) that has an attached document or “fact sheet” that can run dangerous software when opened.

There are also numerous cold callers claiming to be from organisations that can assist you in getting early access to your super.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission deputy chair advised that “the ATO is co-ordinating the early release of super through myGov, and there is no need to involve a third party or pay a fee to get access under this scheme.”

Please stay vigilant with anything you receive via email, mail or telephone call. Advise your staff and families to avoid opening anything that is out of the norm.

If something looks suspicious, it probably is. Your best bet is to delete the email from your inbox and off your account altogether.

If you receive a phone call from an organisation requesting information from you, ask the caller to confirm their details as well as yours. Anyone that calls stating they are from your Super Fund/Centrelink etc will already have your personal details – get them to confirm your DOB and address. If they can’t, hang up.
